Our Take

The Bulova Set-o-Matic with dual quickset day and date, probably revolutionary for the time, it being 1977, it’s still special today. Set in a gold plated case measuring 35mm in diameter and 40mm from lug to lug, not as big as today’s gents watches but a good size. The gold dial is clean with stick markers and the logo, quickset date/day at 3 o’clock and sweep seconds, covered by a replacement acrylic crystal which is new. The crown is unsigned and slightly faded. The back case screws in and has the brand name and date code N7, there are a few light scratches there from opening the watch. The Bulova automatic 1133.10 movement with 17 jewels is running as it should, keeping good time. The aftermarket generic gold plated strap will fit a wrist of approximately 6.9” or 17.5cm. A nice and sturdy watch overall but there is some plate wear evident in places. The watch comes without the original box or papers, but a gift box will accompany the watch. Please don’t use this near water as we cannot guarantee water resistance.

About Bulova

In what seems to be something of a rarity today, Bulova is an American based watch manufacturer, first found in 1875, making it just less than a century younger than the country itself. Today, the Bulova brand is owned by Citizen and has been since 2008.

Perhaps Bulova’s biggest achievement was that it was the first privately owned watch that saw active service on the moon, after a failure of another well-known brand’s watch. The Bulova Chronograph Model #88510/01 later sold for $1.625 million.

Many of the vintage Bulova models are branded under the ‘Accutron’ name, which lays claim to being the first electronic watch, thanks to its ‘tuning fork’ design – giving the watch a faint, high-pitched hum.
